Barrett blow hits Shrimpers

Southend's bid to beat the drop from the Championship has suffered a blow with the news that defender Adam Barrett could be sidelined for a month with an abdominal injury.

Barrett has made 29 appearances for the Shrimpers this season but has suffered a recurrence of an injury that forced him to miss three weeks of the campaign back in November.

"After games, the pain has been raging but I thought I could play through it," he said.

"But on Friday, I just couldn't move. I'm gutted about it because I don't want to miss matches but there doesn't seem much we can do about it."
