Wilder: 'There will be a team from our area in the final, why can't it be Oxford united'

Oxford United boss Chris Wilder has had a go at the JPT rules that insist you cannot have a 'weakened' side play in the competition only four days after he faced Southend United in the league.

Wilder: 'Whatever team I put out I would expect to play well and compete'   So when is a side weakened and when is the manager just utilising the squad in a tough and very long nine month season?   U's boss Chris Wilder is upset that he can't make several changes to the team that will face the Shrimpers in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy regional quarter-final tie Tuesday evening.

Wilder has no choice but to keep six of the players that appeared against Southend only four days ago when they left Roots Hall having lost the league game 2-1.

Wilder told BBC Radio Oxford: "I don't see how picking players who play for our club is ever weakening the side. We will change it around a bit and I will receive the message from the powers that be about how many that can be, which is something I still find ridiculous. I've got injuries, I've got people who aren't fit and people who are not ready to play 90 minutes but unfortunately the rules of the competition state you are not allowed to play a weakened side. Whatever team I put out I would expect to play well and compete."

Which seems fair enough, though nearly half the team seems enough changes for any one, certainly blues boss Paul Sturrock seems at ease with the rules where he may only bring in two, possibily three, new faces.

Eilder did conclude: "There will be a team from our area in the final, why can't it be us. Southend will be thinking exactly the same."

Should be a decent match as well as a tough one for the Essex boys; full team line-up followed by the match report as soon as we can.
