Promotion-chasing Shrewsbury Town are heading into the weekend showdown with league leaders Southend United brimming with confidence, according to manager Graham Turner.

Turner: 'We've had a good record at home this season'

Fifth hosts top in League Two at the Greenhous Meadow this coming Saturday with Shrewsbury the only team in the fourth tier still unbeaten on home soil this season after this weekend's 2-0 victory over fellow high-fliers Gillingham. The Shrimpers are set to prove the sternest test to date though, as they lead the table with an unrivalled nine victories on their travels, and also having seen off the Shrews 3-0 at Roots Hall in late September.

However, the Town boss believes his side are ready and waiting for the divisions match of the day.

Turner told www.shrewsburytown.com: "We know what to expect. They're a well-organised, decent and hard-working side, but from our point of view we've had a good record at home this season and we go into games full of confidence. We'll look forward to it."

Meanwhile, defender Reuben Hazell returned to full training on Monday having been sidelined for close to four months with a knee injury.

Reserve-team games are now on the agenda for the 32-year-old in order to build his match fitness.

Cansdell-Sherriff: On target   Shrewsbury Town 2 Gillingham 0 (Played on Saturday, January 14th)   Goals from Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Mark Wright sealed only a second win in six games in all competitions for Graham Turner's men.

Central defender Cansdell-Sherriff broke the deadlock in emphatic style after 30 minutes. Gillingham were unable to clear a corner and when it fell to Cansdell-Sherriff 12 yards out, the Australian cracked home a rasping volley.

Shrewsbury almost doubled their advantage just before the break but winger Jon Taylor fired just wide after exchanging passes with Marvin Morgan.

Gillingham were improved after the restart and Chris Whelpdale cracked a long range drive just wide but Shrewsbury always looked more dangerous and, after James Collins fired just off target, they wrapped up the points three minutes from time.

Jermaine Grandison's deflected cross ran kindly for Wright and the winger slammed in an unstoppable shot from 12 yards for his eighth goal of the season.

Shrews manager Turner said after the game: "The overall performance was very pleasing. We created chances and it should have been more than two goals. We missed one or two good opportunities but it was a good performance. Defensively we were strong and attacking-wise, when we had the ball, we passed the ball well for most of the game - and that was against a team that is one place below us in the league. I thought it was a comprehensive win, we did well and that should do the confidence the world of good."

Meanwhile, losing Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler said: "We were nowhere near it to be honest. I'm certainly not happy and I'm disappointed for the fans because we didn't just turn up at all. Our body language, even in the warm up, we didn't look like we were at the races and I think that showed in the performance.

You can carry a couple of players but the whole team just didn't turn up and it's not acceptable. It just wasn't good enough and for me to say that hurts. I've told them that in the dressing room and that should hurt them as well. If we want to achieve something this season, we're kidding ourselves if we're going to turn up and play games like that."
