The S24 Preview: Southend United v Hereford United

23 September 2010 09:56
It's all Bulls on Saturday, September 25th, 2010; kick-off 15.00, as the Shrimpers try to return to winning ways against another side that are below us in the league at the moment. v SHRIMPERSWhich Southend will turn up? Let's hope it's the one against Torquay, minus the last 20-minute wobble.Up front I'll take a chance on the old man dropping son Blair and giving Scott Spencer a chance, or even Matt Paterson for that matter, they deserve a go.For all the errors against Morecambe I believe the starting back four is the best we have at the moment with Michael Phillips still out and I would geive them another chance, there was no Prosser like game al la Port Vale.Possible Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Barker, Mohsni, Gilbert, Grant, Simpson, Timlin, Hall, Corr, Sturrock. Subs: Evans, Prosser, Bouzid, Soares, Zaaboub, Paterson, Spencer. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!OPPOSITION Bulls boss Simon Davey is confident that new striking signing Guillem Bauza will prove a great boost to his team.Davey told www.herefordtimes.com: "Their confidence was getting a bit low. They live and die by the goals they score. Bauza's confidence and belief in his own ability will, perhaps, take a bit of pressure off the rest of them and we can see a more free-flowing strike force."Defender Michael Townsend is a doubt with knee problems while midfielder Kenny Lunt is definitely out after receiving two yellow cards at Bury last weekned and immediatly gets a one match ban. In fact the Bulls have League Two's worst disipline record and Davey is obviously concerned. He continued: "I am certain that had we had 11 men on the pitch to finish the game we would have won. We have to make sure that we are a bit more sensible and professional."20Gillingham 71113202257133896-121Morecambe 7030221035111337136-622Macclesfield Town 701317111461245135-823Hereford United 701203112281242115-924Barnet 7121560031101246165-10:ast Time Out: Bury Town 1 Hereford United 1 (played on Saturday, September 18th, 2010.)Full report here:www.herefordtimes.com/sport/thebulls/league_two/read_article/8400740.Full_time__Bury_1_Hereford_United_1/PREVIOUSLYAt Hereford Utd. Cup GROUND On one side is the Floors 2 Go (Edgar Street) Stand, which is a strange looking covered, two tiered affair. The upper tier which is all seated and overhangs the lower terrace, which has a number of supporting pillars. Part of this stand which was built in 1974 is given to away supporters. Opposite is the Merton Meadow Stand, which is a raised, covered single tier, all seated stand. This stand which was opened in 1968, is used as a Family Stand. At the front of this are the team dugouts and a number of windows belonging to offices and Club Bar.The home end, the Merton Meadow Terrace, is a classic looking, partly covered (to the rear) stand. This stand is semi circular in shape, going out around the back of the goal and has a number of supporting pillars. Opposite is the Blackfriars end, which is another partly covered terrace. This end is normally only used for larger games, where it can house both home and away fans. The ground also has some large, unusual looking floodlights. The pitch is the largest in the top-five divisions and only the former Wembley had a larger playing area. There are plans to relocate in the future as the club are in negotiations about a move with the local council and developers. Fans will find it hard to leave Edgar Street as it has been the ground which has seen many a cup upset, most famously Newcastle who lost 2-1 here in 1972. It is intended to have Edgar Street redeveloped as part of a regeneration of the area, including the cattle market and Merton Meadow car park area. The football ground will be part of a new leisure, administration and retail centre in the city. Away fans are housed on one side (towards the Blackfriars End) of the Floors 2 Go (Edgar Street) Stand at one side of the pitch. This stand has an upper tier of seating that overhangs a lower tier of terracing. (Ground information supplied by www.footballgroundguide.com)WEATHERHeavy cloud, but hopefully keeping dry dry and 13c's.REFThe man in the middle is Karl Evans from Manchester. In his fourth year as a ref, he has a booking average of less than three players per game and this season has improved that to players in his five matches so far. Hereford joined the Birmingham Combination and lost its first match 2-3 to Atherstone United. The club's second ever match was an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against future rivals Kidderminster Harriers which they lost 2-7.In 2007/08 the club were never out of the top five from November onwards and consistently placed in the automatic promotion places. Despite being pushed all the way by Stockport County, Hereford secured third place and promotion with a match to spare by defeating Brentford 3-0 at Griffin Park. This was greatly helped due to goals scored by the Blues connection of loanees Gary Hooper and Theo Robinson.Sadly for them they struggled from the start back in the third tier with just 17 points on the board at the halfway point of the season. They rarely placed outside the relegation zone throughout the season with the highest position being 18th after the first match of the season. Hereford's relegation was confirmed on 18 April 2009, after they recorded 1 win and 11 defeats in a 12 match spell.Last season they finished 16th in League Two.16Hereford United 46124732255414224017821546559-11For a far more comprehensive history of the club, go here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hereford_United)
