Sturrock's shrimper signings and a trailist or two!

19 July 2010 15:00
Blues boss Paul Sturrock's revolution continues with five new 'pre-embargo' signings, one becoming a new skipper, a mystery player who didn't get a game, and two possible goalkeepers! Sean Clohessy: Expected to get some game time tonight against DerbyThe trailists first.Former Gills defender Sean Clohessy was seen at Princes Park Friday but stayed on the sidelines, as he was also at the Meet the Blues Day Sunday it's fair to say he's in Southend manager Paul Sturrock's thoughts, and he may be seen in a Blue shirt Monday evening in the pre-season friendly against Derby County. & A game of two keepers; one better than the other it seems! The goalkeepers who played at Dartford last Friday have been identified as ex-Bristol Rovers and Swindon man Rhys Evans & Mikhael Jaimez Ruiz, released by Aldershot. The consensus of those at the game was that Evans was useful, but Ruiz was awful! Oh well, we'll see if one or both start tonight. Craig Easton: Would be good to see him score at Roots Hall this eveningAs for the famous five who have actually signed contracts; let's start with the new skipper, who is a Scot like his manager, central midfielder Craig Easton.Has signed a one year pre-contract with the club after turning down a 'real' offer with Swindon on similar terms, regular first team football seems to be the key that unlocked this transfer, but hardly a move he would have made if the embargo was not to be lifted, or at least the football league allowing these players to turn out when Ron proves, hopefully, the club is actually solvent.Boss Sturrock told www.southendunited.co.uk last week: "Craig is someone I know very well and I have worked with previously. He is 31-years-old and has made nearly 400 career appearances so he is certainly experienced. Craig will show a terrific work ethic in matches and he is a natural leader in my opinion. He's not been captain before when we have worked together but I know he will grow into the role at Southend."Sofiene Zaaboub: The new Matt Gower? OK, early days! The French left-sided player Sofiene Zaaboub helped guide Swindon to automatic promotion from League Two at the first attempt but fell out of favour when the new Shrimpers boss left the Robins for Plymouth Argyle.Made some exciting runs on Friday and could be a real asset, especially after being out of league football for over a year.
