Sturrock: 'Will mull over what I consider to be the best team to win the match'

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock in his weekly Echo column is still not pleased the way his team has been playing recently, and wants them to up their game for the trip to Dagenham & Redbridge at the weekend.

Sturrock: 'We do have competition for places'

Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock is a hard man to please, but he's singled out our loanee keeper from the Premiership for a special word or two.

Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: "We've managed to get good results despite not playing well and much of that has been done to Luke Daniels who we've been very pleased with in goal since he came in on loan from West Bromwich Albion. He was one Graham Coughlan recommended having spent a season with him at Shrewsbury Town and he has been outstanding since coming in. He's helped keep us in games at times and that was certainly the case at Preston North End last weekend in the first round of the FA Cup."

Where Saint Luke picked up his second nine-out-of-ten S24 MOM award in a row, when that happens you know fortune must have smiled on the side.

However, Luggy is well aware that with the 0-0 scoreline and another game against the Lilywhites coming up next week the fixtures are coming up hard and fast, in both league and cup for the table toppers.

Sturrock continued: "It wasn't an ideal performance but we had a few breaks and were able to grab a goalless draw. That means we will replay against Preston next Tuesday and we could be about to face a run of five games in 17 days. We will need to avoid injuries and keep players fit during that spell and, most important of all, we will have to remain focused on the league, which is my biggest concern with all these games going on. They will certainly test us too because Preston will have some of their injured players back and Bristol Rovers are a very good side who are looking to get their season going."

But what about the Robins of Wiltshire in the JPT, not having a bad run themselves, and, of course, the Daggers on Saturday afternoon in the league, three points in the bag?

Sturrock said: "Swindon are also flying after beating Huddersfield in the FA Cup last weekend so we're about to enter a very tough period. That starts with the Dagenham game and we will need to play well to win. I will have to mull over what I consider to be the best team to win the match but we do have competition for places."
