Sturrock: 'We did everything right, we made them make mistakes'

27 December 2011 12:15
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock was happy despite his side's clash at Aldershot Town called off due to floodlight trouble, with the Shrimpers leading 1-0 and against ten men!

Sturrock: 'It was in the lap of the gods'   Shots defender Darren Jones had been sent off after 39 minutes for lashing out at Liam Dickinson, who had earlier scored from the penalty spot to hand the visitors the lead and supremacy.

However, the match was abandoned at the interval following the lighting failure, but the veteran Blues boss Paul Sturrock was as philosphical as ever and determined to remain positive.

Sturrock told the PA: "It was in the lap of the gods, but we've got to take encouragement from what we did. We did everything right - we were strong, we pressurised the ball, made them make mistakes, and if we can take that into the next game I will be very happy. Their home record is second to none this year, so they're a difficult side to play against, and in the first half we matched them. The home team are normally the offensive side but we worked very hard as a unit. From here we've just got to do exactly what we did today in the next game."

Which is Saturday afternoon away to AFC Wimbledon when it's back to square one, without Bilel, Gilbert. and now Dickinson, and maybe even skipper Chris Barker once again!
