Sturrock underlines importance of familiarity

Manager Paul Sturrock admitted it has taken time for his players to gel in the wake of Southend's 2-0 victory at Oxford. The Shrimpers ended Oxford's three-game winning streak with a repeat of the scoreline at Cheltenham in their last match on December 14, courtesy of goals from Barry Corr and Sean Clohessy. Sturrock said: "We've got good players at this football club. "Earlier in the season they were playing off the cuff a bit because the players didn't know each other, but they know each other now. "There was a good shape to the side and the boys worked hard, starting from the front and working back. "We're down to the bare 18, but we're playing with confidence."
