Sturrock: 'Torquay a wounded animal'; Ling: 'Can't keep pulling rabbits out of the hat'

Both managers have their say before the weekend clash between Southend United and Torquay United at Roots Hall Saturday afternoon.

Sturrock: 'They're a good passing team who work very hard'

Blues boss Paul Sturrock has plenty of respect for the Shrimpers weekend opposition Torquay United, who are not in the best of form, including a 5-2 hammering at home to the Gills last Staurday, but they've only let in five goals all season away from home all season!

Sturrock told BBC Essex: "It's a wounded animal we're playing against, a team that was in the top six and lost its way a bit. They have some decent players, I watched a couple of games in the last couple of weeks and they haven't been that far out of games. They're a good passing team who work very hard to get themselves into the right areas."

And let's face it, Lingy had a decent record in south-east Essex with the bloody Borient!

So what do you think the attendence will be on Saturday against Martin Ling's Torquay United?: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk

Ling: 'We're not good enough every time a one-to-one defensive situation arose'

It's all gone a bit pear shaped for Torquay recently after a promising start.

The Gulls have not won since beating Macclesfield at home 3-0 on September 3rd seven games ago.

In that time they have drawn 4 and lost 3, last winning away 1-0 at Aldershot on August 16th.

The last game saw Gillingham grab a nap hand at Plainmoor which meant Gulls boss Martin Ling has seen his side drop to 16th position in the fourth tier, seven points off the play-off pace.

Ling said: "It's nowhere near good enough and we were not good enough every time a one-to-one defensive situation arose. It was not only our back four but Nouble and Kuffour were too good for us and their movement caused us problems. It just wasn't good enough and I told the players that in there (after the match)."

Any changes then for the Devon based club?

"The question is do we go with three centre-halves and change the system? I heard the fans calling for Mark Ellis and I think he has got every chance next week to be honest. We can't keep pulling rabbits out of the hat, although we nearly did it again, 2-0 down and then we got it back to 2-2. But you can't keep doing it."
