Sturrock: 'Poorest performance I've been involved with here'

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock was an angry Luggy after watching his team sink to a 4-1 defeat at home to Swindon Town.

Sturrock:

PAUL Sturrock felt his Southend United side produced the worst home performance of his spell in charge when they suffered a 4-1 defeat against Swindon Town tonight.

Blues conceded four goals at Roots Hall for the first time in six years as they suffered a convincing defeat against the Robins.

And the reverse left Sturrock furious at the final whistle.

“That was the poorest performance I’ve been involved with here since coming to the football club. We were slow, sluggish and lethargic and you just can’t afford to be like that against a team like Swindon. They’ve been playing Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday while we’ve had a bit of rest but it was hard to tell which team was supposed to be fresh out there."

It certainly was, there was not much for the home side to take from this bar a good attacking spell at the start of the second half that on another day might have brought them back in the game.

However, you can't argue with that scoreline.

Sturrock continued: "We were poor at the back and gave away some bad goals. The midfield was chasing shadows and the front two didn’t do their jobs so we were poor all over. I’d also like to think the goalkeeper would hold his hands up for a couple of the goals and we now need a reaction when we go to Plymouth this weekend.”

Though he may want to have a look at his team selection in the cold light of day.
