Sturrock pleased with performance

Southend manager Paul Sturrock was over the moon with his side's display in the 2-0 win at Bradford. The visitors had gained only one point from their first three matches but shook Bradford by going ahead after 16 minutes when Barry Corr lobbed the ball over the head of keeper Jon McLaughlin after collecting a lofted pass from Ryan Hall. Bradford boss Peter Taylor, who played for and managed Southend, introduced his three substitutes at the start of the second half but they had little effect on the course of the match and the visitors went further in front after 54 minutes with a low 25-yard shot from Anthony Grant after Sean Clohessy's angled pass had been played into his path. Bradford posed little threat on the Southend goal. James Hanson missed their best chance in the first half, shooting wide of advancing keeper Glenn Morris, while Gareth Evans snatched at a good chance six minutes from the end, sending the ball wide of the angle of the post and crossbar. The only blot on the night for Southend was the sending off of Clohessy for the second bookable offence in the 76th minute. Sturrock said: "I was delighted with this performance and we proved we have got some good players. When they have applied themselves tactically and know what to do when the other side has the ball we will be a decent side. We have had three hard games in the league so far and Bradford is a hard place to come, but there are no easy games in this division."
