Sturrock on signings & trialists: 'Must make sure the player I get in demands a place in the side'

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock is not certain either of the two strikers on trail against Ipswich Town reserves has the quality he's looking for to join his play-off seeking squad. Sturrock: 'Trialists showed a semblance of what we're looking for' Blues boss Paul Sturrock continues on his charm offensive that we don't need to be concerned that his depleted squad, that has hung on to vital points in the last two games by the skin of their teeth, particularly needs an emergency loan freshen up.This is even 48 hours before they face another game on Saturday at home to Northampton Town, also desperate for points themselves as they try and get closer to those vital play-off positions, the Shrimpers being only one point off the pace. Sturrock told BBC Essex: "If we bring someone in and he has to play in games, then it upsets the apple cart with players who are working so hard at the minute. I have got to make sure the player I get in is top drawer and will demand a place in the side." So how about the two strikers on trail for the Blues Two's in the 4-0 defeat against Ipswich Town reserves Wednesday afternoon; Lee Boylan, released by Stevenage in January, and Sam Higgins, who asked to be released from his Chelmsford City contract last week and had scored 16 times in 27 appearances for the Clarets?Luggy told all: "The boy Boylan isn't totally fit yet so making a decision on him would be rather harsh. They played in the game and showed a semblance of what we're looking for but there would be a lot of thought into whether they are of the standard we want to achieve. So I'm leaving my options open at the moment." Doesn't sound promising on both fronts, and a forward to back up Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock is badly needed whatever Luggy may be saying, lack of dosh and high wages probably has more to do with it if he's struggling to bring a player in of real quality that 'demands' their place.
