Sturrock longs for home success

Southend manager Paul Sturrock was left cursing as his team continued their search for a first home win since the end of October with a 3-2 defeat to leaders Chesterfield. The Spireites bounced back from a disappointing 2-2 draw to Accrington on Monday as two penalties from Danny Whitaker either side of a Deane Smalley strike wrapped up the victory. Craig Easton struck when the score was 2-1, while Barry Corr scored a late penalty, but it proved to be mere consolation for the Shrimpers whose last victory on home soil was a 1-0 triumph over Rotherham. "I'm very disappointed and think we should call ourselves `Southend shoot ourselves in the foot United`," said Sturrock. "So far this season we have kicked ourselves in the teeth so many times with zany goals. "The first was stupid, the second was poor defending and the third was hard to believe, although I will have to look at the penalties again. "To the lads' credit, there is a pride about them and anyone coming in for the second half would not have known which was top team and which was a middle of the road team. I'm looking to freshen things up during January bit it is not about knee-jerk reactions."
