Sturrock: 'First 45, worst performance of the season'; Mathias: 'I've slaughtered a team that's won'

Both Southend United's Paul Sturrock and Stockport County's Ray Mathias had their say after the game Saturday and it was the winning manager who had a go at his players! Sturrock: 'Can't put my finger on why we started this game so badly' Oh well, the boys did their best in very difficult circumstances and when young sub Kyle Asante hit the equaliser with less than 10 minutes left the Shrimpers looked good for a point, but it was not to be as the Hatters grabbed a stoppage time winner.Blues boss Paul Sturrock was not in the mood to take it out on such an understrength side, especially if he was not allowed to bring in any players on loan due to a transfer embargo we were told was lifted, but the wily old Scot does hate losing, especially after such a poor first half. Sturrock told BBC Essex: "Well, after 45 minutes, it didn't look like we had any chance in this game. I just can't put my finger on why we started this game so badly. The whole 45 minutes of the first half was probably our worst performance of the season."Fair enough, and good to see he doesn't use the problems at the club as an excuse, though he has every right to do so, but it could be a long end to the season.Luggy's still got a very tough task to keep morale in the camp high. The official match report:www.southendunited.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10444~51900,00.html try { FB.Event.subscribe('xfbml.render', function() { var fbTags = $('.facebookLike'); for(var i=0; iretweet-->Ray Mathias (that's him on the right!): 'We've passed the ball superbly at times'Meanwhile, new Hatters boss Ray Mathias can still keep dreaming of a great escape, though he was unhappy with the way his lads let the Essex boys back in the match with so little time on the clock. Mathia told BBC Radio Manchester: "It's the first time I've gone in and slaughtered a team that's won 2-1, as we can't afford to let teams in that late in the game. I've seen him (Danny Rowe) play in the reserves and it made my mind up about putting him in and he's gone out there and produced the goods. We've passed the ball superbly at times and overall I was really pleased with them."And you can't argue with that, over the whole 90 minutes they deserved the points. The Stockport view of the game:www.stockportcounty.com/page/MatchReport/0,,10419~51900,00.html
