Sturrock: 'Being named manager of the month can often be the kiss of death'

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock is up for the montthly managers award this morning, and is well aware it can lead to a run of bad form for the side of the winning boss!

Sturrock: 'Even being nominated is an indication we’re doing well'

He may be the bookie's favourite but Blues boss Paul Sturrock has no intention of letting a mere manager of the month award get in the way of victory over Crewe Alexandra Saturday afternoon.

Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: “Being named manager of the month can often be the kiss of death but if I do win in then hopefully that won’t be the case for us at the weekend. Even being nominated is an indication we’re doing well. However, while it might be my name on the short-list what’s happening is down to my backroom team and players as well so it would be an award for all of us, not just me.”

With four victories, a draw and one defeat in the club's six games during September Luggy remains the best bet to pick up the gong, but let's face it, he's seen it all before while grabbing the League One and Two titles over the last decade with Plymouth Argyle.

The judges deciding the winner are former Charlton Athletic manager Alan Curbishley, Sky Sports Football League expert Peter Beagrie, Football League Chief Operating Officer Andy Williamson, BBC Sport’s Mark Clemmit, League Managers Association Deputy CEO Olaf Dixon and npower Head of Sponsorship Emma Collins.
