Sturrock: 'All at sea first half, settled in the second'

13 November 2011 16:02
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock felt it was a game of two halves, many may say it was a game of two thirds/one third to Preston, but the Essex boys survived & the pair have to face each other again Tuesday week for the pleasure of facing the Latics.

Sturrock: 'Timlin shouldn't be going to ground that like inside the penalty area'   The Shrimpers had another first half to forget in the first round of the FA Cup at Deepdale, crikey, one day a team is going to catch us out if we keep pushing our luck, something that Blues boss Paul Sturrock accepted before, also once again, we rallied after the break.    Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk:“I was very disappointed with how we played in the first half. We were all at sea and people were in the wrong positions. Our goalkeeper has had to keep us in it with a couple of good saves but I thought we looked far more settled in the second half.”   In fact, we could have won it al la Oxford in the league with a Hall second half special but after a series of stunning saves by Southen's loanee keeper Luke Daniels it was the turn of the giant German shot stopper for Preston, Thorsten Stuckmann, to show there were in face two men at Deepdale between the sticks!   Sadly, for one man, Jean-Paul Kalala, the game came too soon, the French midfielder having just resumed training after a family bereavement, and was replaced by Bilel Mohsni on 52 minutes.   Sturrock explained: “Unfortunately JP was well off it out there. He apologised for his performance after the game and I thought it was only after the substitution that we started to take charge of things.”   Then again, the Lancashire lads should have been at least one goal up going into the second 45 as Barry Nicholson, not their usual spot kick taker, he was on the bench, blasted his 37th minute penalty chance high and wide after a mistimed Michael Timlin tackle.   It was similar to Izale McLeod's third minute miss for Barnet, must be the way Luke stares at them!    Sturrock said:“Tims is saying he got the ball but he shouldn't be going to ground that like inside the penalty area. He should know better than that but thankfully it didn't cost us and we will now have a replay."   Where we will play Oldham Athletic at home if we get past the Lilywhites on Tuesday, November 22nd, kick-off 19.45, at Roots Hall.   And let's remember, that's thirteen matches unbeaten now with 11 wins; unlucky, we will see at the Daggers in front of 1,500 screaming Shrimpers, and some of their fans!   Full FA Cup Second Round Draw: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk    Some interesting predictions (one bloke got it right!): www.pne-online.net    Who is the best Shrimpers boss of the last 30 years?
