Southend United 1 Stockport County 1: Blues left it late, but Blair Sturrock came off the subs bench to rescue a point for his side in stoppage time after Stockport had taken the lead in controversal circumstances. So after all the excitement of the summer, the boring old stuff of an actual league game, and with a mate handing out photocopies of the 24 man Shrimpers squad, 17 of whom many of us have never seen in action before, one knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary season. And we even saw the new Blues boss Paul Sturrock sent to the stand, never a dull moment at Roots Hall! However, for long periods of the game it was just that, dull, as two teams, both with many new players, but the away side only six, the wimps, there were long balls going straight off for throw-ins and goal-kicks, and a number of misplaced passes, as colleagues still hardly knew each other, let alone able to look like teams that might fight for promotion.Still, 45 league games to go!After some early sparring with Anthony Grant put through after only three minutes but taking the ball out of play when faced by County keeper Owen Fon Williams, then the Hatters George Connelly having a go from 20 yards and having his shot well saved by the new first choice keeper Glenn Morris, it was Southend who should have taken the lead on the quarter hour.Skipper Craig 'is it Kevin Maher in disguise'
