White boosts Shrimpers

Southend skipper John White is fit for Friday night's home clash against Newport.

The versatile right-back has missed the club's last four matches due to a shoulder injury but is back in the frame for the visit of County as the promotion-chasing Shrimpers look to extend their seven-match unbeaten run in League Two.

Second-choice goalkeeper Paul Smith (back) also returns to contention, but defender Luke O'Neill continues to miss out with his thigh problem although he could be fit for next weekend's trip to Mansfield.

Striker Cauley Woodrow will play no part having been recalled from his loan spell by parent club Fulham on Wednesday.

Newport boss Justin Edinburgh could hand a debut to Shaun Jeffers.

The 21-year-old forward moved to Rodney Parade as a part of the deal which took Conor Washington to Sky Bet League One side Peterborough earlier in the week, and he is in contention to play some part.

Max Porter (groin) and Andrew Hughes came off the bench in the closing stages of last weekend's 3-1 defeat to Bristol Rovers following their recovery from injury, and the duo are in contention to start on Friday night.

The postponement of Tuesday's match with Plymouth has given Byron Anthony (broken leg) additional recovery time, but he is unlikely to be ready to return.
