Shrimpers boss plots changes to get the better of Gills

Southend manager Phil Brown intends to change his side in search of swift revenge against Gillingham in the EFL Cup after they beat them 3-1 at home on the opening day of the Sky Bet League One season.

Brown suggested 20-year-old goalkeeper Ted Smith could come in while veteran defender Adam Barrett would be given a rest.

Adam King may also be in contention after the on-loan Swansea midfielder came off the bench at the weekend.

Midfielder Michael Timlin (hamstring) and forward Nile Ranger (groin) continue their rehabilitation, while Anthony Wordsworth (hamstring) is a longer-term absentee.

Gillingham have boosted their squad with the season-long loan signing of West Ham teenager Josh Pask, who can play as a centre-back and also a holding midfielder.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas could lead the attack again, having scored on his Gills debut a day after after securing a loan move from QPR.

Midfielder Scott Wagstaff (calf), defender Aaron Morris (knee) and left-back Bradley Garmston (knee) are all still not fit.

Lee Martin is likely to be sidelined for as long as nine months after he suffered a serious ankle injury during the pre-season match against Leyton Orient.
