Southend United's Chris Barker after Northampton Town and before Morecambe

Blues now regular centre-back Chris Barker knows his side have to cut out the defensive errors if they are going to move up the League Two table. CHRIS Barker wants Southend United's defensive sloppiness at Northampton Town on Saturday to be just a blip. Blues gifted the Cobblers both their goals in a 2-1 League Two defeat at the Sixfields Stadium. But centre-back Barker now wants to see a return to the form which saw his side concede just once in their three matches before the weekend. "We had been doing OK at the back until Saturday and we want to get back to being like that again," said the 30-year-old. "We made two basic errors which led to their goals, which is disappointing, but now we need to start again against Morecambe this weekend and start to kick on again." Morecambe are currently bottom of the League Two table having picked up just three points from their opening six games of the season. Blues have enjoyed more success than the Lancashire side and had secured three successive victories before Saturday's defeat. But Barker is still frustrated that the winning run came to an end as a result of Southend's mistakes. "It's very disappointing because I think we lost the game rather than them winning it, to be honest," said the experienced defender. "We were 1-0 up after an hour and were well placed to go on and win it. "But we gifted them goals and you just can't afford to do that."
