Southend United: Sturrock speaks

Blues boss Paul Sturrock has plenty to say about his side after the club's latest pre-season friendly at Salisbury City ended in a 1-1 draw. Paul Sturrock: Not a happy LuggySturrock: 'You need the right attitude and work rate from the first minute'Only a close range header from striker Matt Paterson with six minutes on the clock at Salisbury last Friday evening stopped the Shrimpers new look side from losing a fair bit of good will that had been built up with the faithful after a good display against Derby County the Monday before.Though, of course, most of that was the second half when the Rams brought some kids on; then again a team that's still getting to know each other is not going to play like Spain at this early stage. However, to his credit, manager Sturrock was not going to let his players, and they are mostly his, off that lightly.Paul told Blues Player after the game: "I'm disappointed because it was a poor performance. Salisbury showed a passion and an attitude which some of my players didn't and you can't just switch that on and off. You need the right attitude and work-rate from the first minute."About the only thing the Southend manager took from the game was we didn't lose, though he must be happy with Paterson's form in front of goal, still the only squad member to have scored this pre-season. Sturrock continued: "Too many of the players were thinking about playing first and then their attitude second and that isn't right. I also think we will be better off for having played this match and have to learn from the mistakes made."
