Rare strike from Ben Coker earns Southend victory

Ben Coker's first goal in 18 months secured Southend a 2-1 win against Scunthorpe at Roots Hall.

The left-back capped an impressive display by blasting home a powerful effort in the 75th minute to make it back-to-back wins for Phil Brown's side.

However, the Shrimpers were forced to come from behind after the Iron took the lead in the eighth minute. Gary McSheffrey brilliantly teed himself up before netting with a fantastic half-volley from 25 yards.

Southend hit back to equalise in the 36th minute when Coker did brilliantly down the left-hand side before teeing-up captain Michael Timlin to stroke a low effort into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Scunthorpe almost regained the lead on the stroke of half-time when Paddy Madden fired against the inside of the right-hand upright.

But Southend stood firm and grabbed the winning goal 15 minutes from time as Coker burst into penalty area before netting with a blistering effort which means Scunthorpe have still not won away from home since January.
