Early double gives Shrimpers win

Two goals inside the opening 20 minutes secured Southend a 2-0 win against Stevenage at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers' summer signing Myles Weston bagged his first goal for the club just nine minutes in with a calm finish after Barry Corr had headed down a long clearance from goalkeeper Daniel Bentley.

Corr also made Southend's second goal in the 20th minute when he rolled the ball in to the path of defender Ben Coker who fired a low, right-foot shot in to the bottom right-hand corner of the net from the edge of the penalty.

Stevenage attempted to hit back and were twice denied by Bentley before the break.

The young shot-stopper did superbly well to keep out a close-range effort from Adam Marriott before he rushed off his line to deny Chris Whelpdale when the winger was clean through on goal.

Southend came closest to scoring in the second half with Corr twice having shots saved by Stevenage goalkeeper Sam Beasant.
