Woodall wounds Shrimpers

Brian Woodall's late goal grabbed Dagenham a share of the spoils from a 1-1 draw with promotion-chasing Southend.

Michael Timlin, in the last game of his loan spell from Swindon, had put Southend ahead in the 27th minute against the run of play when a long throw from Ryan Leonard was cleared into the midfielder's path and he blasted into the top corner from 25 yards.

But Woodall snatched the equaliser from just inside the box in the 87th minute with a strike into the bottom corner of Luke Daniel's goal after being set up by Billy Bingham.

It was a deserved point for a spirited Daggers side who spent most of the opening 20 minutes camped in Southend's half.

Blues clawed their way back into the game before taking the lead. At one point it seemed they would take all three points as the visitors were denied a host of chances.

Woodall's shot was blocked by Mark Phillips, with Jon Nurse having a close range header parried by Daniels, before Christian Montano fired just wide and Sean Clohessy cleared a Nurse effort off the line before Woodall's goal.

Anthony Grant had an effort blocked by Oluwafemi Ilesanmi as the Shrimpers pressed for a winner but Dagenham held firm to stand three points clear of the relegation zone.
