Redshaw wins it for Morecambe

Morecambe continued their excellent record against Southend with a 1-0 win at Roots Hall.

The Shrimps have now won eight and drawn one of the nine league meetings between the two teams.

And it was a fifth-minute volley from Jack Redshaw which secured their latest success against the Shrimpers who came into the game on the back of four straight wins.

The former Manchester City trainee crept in behind Southend centre-back Adam Thompson to meet Shaun Beeley's ball forward and fired a first-time volley into the back of the net from 12 yards.

Southend hit back with Conor Clifford striking the crossbar from 20 yards and Shaq Coulthirst heading straight at Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche from close range.

Coulthirst and Kevan Hurst were then both denied in quick succession by Roche before Coulthirst also dragged an effort wide after neat approach play from Jack Payne.

However, Morecambe still threatened and Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley was forced into making two good saves to stop Redshaw adding to his tally.

And Shrimps substitute Andy Fleming fired wide when clean through on goal.
