Zola strikes in Albion win

Burton secured their first win of the season courtesy of a great first-half goal from Calvin Zola in a 1-0 victory at Southend.

The Brewers, who had drawn their first three league matches this season, took the lead in in the 30th minute when John McGrath picked out Zola and he unleashed a 25-yard shot that beat Glenn Morris' dive and went in the top right-hand corner.

Southend failed to get a shot on target in the first half, but they rectified that a minute into the second half when Kane Ferdinand headed straight at goalkeeper Ross Atkins.

Neil Harris nearly broke his league scoring duck for the Blues but Atkins blocked his close-range header.

And Atkins caught Bilel Mohsni's far-post header from Peter Gilbert's cross from the left, before the Brewers' stopper did well to parry a late curling 30-yard Ryan Hall shot.

Burton were happy to attack on the break but almost doubled their advantage when Justin Richards raced clear but saw Morris turn his low effort out for a corner.
