Shots check Blues promotion bid

Southend slipped out of the automatic promotion places as Danny Hylton's 15th goal of the season handed Aldershot a 1-0 win.

Paul Sturrock's side dropped from third to fourth in the League Two table after conceding in the 59th minute at Roots Hall.

Josh Payne's free-kick was cleared to the left byline by Blues captain Chris Barker, but Darren Jones crossed the ball back across goal and Hylton headed home from six yards into the bottom left corner.

Aldershot beat Southend 2-0 last month and only a smart save from Cameron Belford prevented Peter Vincenti from making it the same scoreline.

Southend rarely troubled Jamie Young in the Shots goal as the hosts struggled to get efforts on target.

Lee Hills' cross-shot was palmed to safety by Young in the first half, while Sonny Bradley forced a save out of Cameron Belford in stoppage time.

Sturrock used all three substitutes in a bid to snatch a point but Shots made it back-to-back wins following Saturday's 1-0 win over Bradford.
