Shrimps shred Shrimpers
Southend United 2 Morecambe 3: The home side came back twice but a third goal for Sammy Mcllroy's men proved fatal and saw the Shrimps to their first win and off the bottom of the table. Morecambe won their first league match of the season as they ran out 3-2 victors away at Southend on Saturday afternoon.Morecambe resisted early Southend pressure and opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Stewart Drummond netted after Mark Duffy drove his initial shot from loan debutant Tony Capaldi's long throw into the ground. The lead lasted just a minute before Blues equalised when a long ball forward picked out Anthony Grant and the midfielder blasted a 35-yard effort low into the bottom-right corner for his fourth goal in four league games. It took the Shrimps five minutes to regain the lead as Paul Mullin headed in unmarked at the far post from three yards out from Duffy's centre from the right. Southend levelled for a second time in the 51st minute when Michael Timlin's free-kick was headed back across goal by Bilel Mohsni for Barry Corr to outjump Barry Roche and nod home from close range.
