The 19-year-old will complete his switch to Roots Hall, where he spent three months last season, in an agreement that will run until next January. Although the move has yet to been concluded, Chelsea have allowed Sawyer to link up with the Shrimpers as they prepare for the new campaign. Southend boss Steve Tilson told the club's official website: "I'm over the moon with bringing Lee back to the club. He's an exciting young player who we know all about and I am sure supporters will be as delighted as we are with the news. "He is about a week behind the rest of the squad in terms of fitness, so to get him up to speed as soon as possible Chelsea have allowed him to play tonight (Tuesday) at Canvey Island while all the paperwork is completed." Sawyer, who is yet to make an appearance for Chelsea, scored three goals in 13 appearances for Tilson's side last season.
