The 25-year-old was ruled out for the season after sustaining the injury in the 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient last month but he is making good progress after having 20 staples removed.

He told The Echo: "It's some good news for me at last. The doctors were impressed with the healing of it so far and for the first time in weeks things are looking up.

"I've also been left with one of the most impressive scars I've seen and if anyone's short of a panto pirate later this year, then I'm your man!"

Meanwhile, Southend have been nominated in three categories for the 2009 Football League Awards.

The Shrimpers are one of four teams up for League One Family Club of the Year and are also in the running for the division's Community Club of the Year. Midfielder Stuart O'Keefe has been nominated for Championship Manager Young Apprentice of the Year for League One.
