And Scannell has confirmed it was the continued late payment of wages which forced him to depart. "There have been complications off the field at Southend which I think have been well documented now and I just needed more security in my life to be honest," said the 25-year-old. "I don't really want to say too much about it, but I have bills to pay just like everyone else and it's been hard being at Southend."
