Southend United centre-half and captain Chris Barker knows the last performance against Swindon was just not good enough and promises the fans they will improve for tuesday night's clash with Gillingham. Barker: 'Be up in the top four of five so that’s certainly our aim'   Shrimpers skipper Chris Barker echoes his boss when acknowledging what a poor performance is was against the Robins last weekend, and wants his side to turn that around this evening.   Barker told www.echo-news.co.uk: “We let ourselves and the fans down with how we played against Swindon and now we want to show what we can really do. We owe the fans an apology for the performance at the weekend and we want to give them something to cheer this evening. Three points would made us all feel better again but we need to start playing well and not just talk about doing it.”   It's been an inconsistant start to the season for Southend, and the former Plymouth player knows the team has a couple of Roots Hall games in a week to show the faithful what they have what it takes to make a push for the paly-off zone.   Barker said: “We need to play well in every game we have. We’ve shown we can do it but we need to do it more often if we are to stay in the race for promotion. We have two home games in the space of five days coming up now and if we can win those then we will probably be up in the top four of five so that’s certainly our aim.”   Then again the Gills are not just going to lie down and say have three points, especially with the Hess target of three successive wins!   Barker concluded: “Gillingham will definitely be there or there abouts at the end of the season. They’re a strong side and it has the makings of a really good game tonight."
