Shrimpers playing on for future if not the play-offs: 'I'm now holding more talks with the gaffer'

Southend United v Aldershot Town: Former Gillingham right-back Sean Clohessy wants to be back to his best against Aldershot Saturday even though he has the luxury of a two-year contract, others aren't so lucky! The Shots game is vital. Clohessy: 'I'm determined to play much better again against Aldershot'Shrimpers full-back Sean Clohessy, like his boss, has certainly not given up on the outside chance of his side finishing in the play-off positions and even if they fail in that task the squad have to think about their futures at Roots Hall. With his challenging runs up the right wing Sean has been a consistant fixture in the first team set up, and is one of the rare players to have the luxury of a second season confirmed in his deal. Even so, there's always the chance of a pay rise; stop sniggering at the back. Clohessy told www.echo-news.co.uk: "I signed a two year deal in the summer and I'm now holding more talks with the gaffer. But you can never think you've made it. You could lose form or get injured and thing can change very quickly in football. On the whole I've been pleased with how things have gone for me this season and I think I've played more games than anyone else here. It's a just a shame we can't be a bit higher up the table." The former Gilingham defender accepts though he was not at his best in the 2-1 defeat at Stockport county last weekend. Clohessy continued: "I wasn't happy with how I played on Saturday and, to be honest, I thought it was probably the worst I've played all season. It was playing on my mind all weekend because I was so disappointed about it. As a professional you know when you've played well and when you've played badly. You don't need anybody else to tell you so I'm determined to play much better again against Aldershot and help us get a good result." Others of course are not so lucky to have the safety of a second year on their contracts and many will hope to impress Blues boss Paul Sturrock over the remaining eight games.Sadly for him one-year centre-back Luke Prosser is out at the moment and will want to prove his worth before his deal is up. Young strikers Harry Crawford and Kyle Asante should have done enough to warrant another season at least, but things could be bad for left back Johnny Herd, unlikely to be seen again this season. As Luggy confirmed yesterday: "We certainly won't be giving up on a top seven finish and we will remain competitive in all of those matches but I am already thinking about next year now. There are one or two players I'm looking to sign on pre contracts and in our remaining fixtures I will be taking a look at players in the squad who maybe feel they haven't had a fair crack of the whip so far. It's then up to them to take the opportunity and show me they should still be here next season."Anybody know how long Louie Soares signed on for?Good luck lads!
