Torquay lost their 100% record as Southend beat the Gulls 2-1 to grab their first league home win of the season. Paul Sturrock's side went in two up at half-time following a one-sided 45 minutes that saw Anthony Grant and Josh Simpson beat Scott Bevan with quality strikes. Midfielder Grant handed Blues the lead in the 15th minute when he half-volleyed the ball into the top-right corner from the edge of the box after Ryan Hall's corner from the right was only half cleared. Southend spent long periods in Torquay's half and doubled their advantage in the 43rd minute when the Gulls lost possession. Midfielder Simpson picked the ball up and unleashed a scorching right-foot shot from 25 yards out to the right of a diving Bevan. Torquay finally pulled a goal back in the 78th minute when substitute Martin Gritton's shot hit the right post and rebounded for Chris Zebroski to slot into the bottom-right corner from six yards. The Gulls should have equalised a minute later but skipper Nick Wroe shot wide from six yards, and Glenn Morris denied Billy Key a stoppage time headed leveller from a Kevin Nicholson free-kick.
