The former Tottenham Hotspur and Ipswich Town youth and Barnet loanee Calum Butcher may still join Southend United. Manager Paul Sturrock is to decide soon. Culum Butcher; Born in Rochford, wonder if he's had a pint at the Anne BoleynSouthend United boss Paul Sturrock is mulling over a move for defender Calum Butcher. The Rochford-born 20-year-old, who had been with Tottenham Hotspur for three years, has played as a trialist in Southend's last two reserve games. And he has impressed first team manager Paul Sturrock. Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: "Calum did very well. I'm thinking over what to do and taking advice from the likes of Graham Coughlan, who play in the same position as him." Butcher, who was brought up in Leigh on Sea, played for Blues and Ipswich Town during his youth before joining Spurs in 2007. He made four appearances for Barnet during a loan spell in the 2009/10 season and is now available on a free transfer. But Blues could face competition for his signature if they decide to pursue their interest further, according to reserve team manager Graham Coughlan. Coughlan said: "There are other clubs interested in Calum but he's done really, really well in the matches he's had for us. It's good that he's come in to play because it enables us to check his character and attitude before deciding if we want to sign him or not. There are other options we have available to us and we had a look at 12 trialists in a match at our training ground last week. But Calum has a head start on everyone else because he's played well twice for the reserves now and we would like to see more of him." And we will be handing a trail to Essex boy and former Shrimper youth Calum Butcher who plays at centre-back.He even had a go with the young Ipswich side before joing Premiership Spurs where he failed to play in the first team but was on the bench when the North London club faced Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Cup in February 2009, a game that finished 1-1.Calum then went on loan to Barnet in the same year, where he made four appearances over the 2009/10 season.Getting another chance will be Westcliff boy the 18-year-old central defender George Artemi, who scored for the reserve in the Essex Senior Cup win at Grays, and has experience with both Rushden & Diamonds and Great Wakering Rovers while turning out a couple of times for Ricky Duncan's Under-18's.First team squad members who should see some action before Friday's Rooots Hall encounter with Bradford City are Rhys Evans in goal as well as midfielder Adam Bouzid, wideboy Louie Soares, and strikers Harry Crawford and Kyle Asante.Could be some legs in young Calum if he performs over the rest of the season, two more Blues Two's matches before the end of term. The Butcher FilesPersonal informationFull nameCalum James Butcher[1]Date of birth26 February 1991 (1991-02-26) (age 20)Place of birthRochford, Essex, EnglandHeight6 ft 2 in (1.88 m)Playing positionDefenderClub informationCurrent clubTottenham HotspurNumber41Youth careerIpswich TownSouthend United2007-2009Tottenham HotspurSenior career*YearsTeamApps†(Gls)†2009-Tottenham Hotspur0(0)2009→ Barnet (loan)3(0)* Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 12:58, 27 December 2009 (UTC).† Appearances (Goals).
