Shrimpers lose to Leeds United
Leeds United 2 Southend United 0: The boys from Essex fought hard enough but two second half goals gave the home side the win and send the Shrimpers to their ninth successive away defeat. Blues boss Steve Tilson made two changes from the side that were defeated at Gillingham; Matt Paterson for the injured Spencer up front, and Stuart O'Keefe given a start instead of the more inconsistant Laurent, who dropped to the bench.And for an hour the away side held their more illustrious opponents before a double strike saw the Shrimpers sink to yet another defeat on the road and make next week's two home games against Brentford and Brighton the final word on the teams chances of avoiding relegation to League Two.Anything less than six points will almost certainly see Southend return to the bottom tier for the first time in five seasons and that famous play-off win against Lincoln at the Millenium Stadium.
