Shrimpers chief allays fans fears

On June 12, the HMRC issued a winding-up petition against the Shrimpers on the same day it passed new rules allowing clubs more time to pay off their debts. But Martin is adamant the club will resolve its issues in a similar way to last summer when Southend met a £660,000 bill. He said: "The timing could not have been more perverse. It was later described to me as a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing. "Whatever the position, since June 12 we have been in a statutory process that has to run its course. Supporters need not be alarmed." The club will attend a hearing later this month where they "will seek an adjournment whilst we conclude the agreement with HMRC".
