Southend midfielder Lee Sawyer has signed a one-year contract extension with an option of a further year. The 21-year-old former Chelsea youngster moved to the Shrimpers in January on a free transfer from Woking on a deal to until the end of the season. Sawyer, who had two loan spells at Roots Hall while on Chelsea's books, has made 14 appearances this season before an ankle injury ended his campaign last month. Sawyer told the club's official website: "I'm really pleased to be staying for a further 12 months. When I joined at the start of the year I was very grateful to Southend for giving me another chance so I didn't hesitate in signing this deal. "I'd like to think I've shown glimpses of what I am capable of before I got injured. That was really frustrating as I was just starting to establish myself again in the side. But I know with a full pre-season behind me that I`ll hopefully be back to the player of old." United boss Paul Sturrock added: "I've been pleased with the way Lee has come into the side and performed. Off the pitch he has been no problems at all and on it he has shown glimpses that he can be a player for us. He now just needs to learn to play the game the way I like it played and he will be a real asset next season."
