Ryan rises from sick bed to beat Oxford: 'I just had to make sure I hit the target'

Southend United winger and now clear top scorer Ryan Hall was throwing up like a good 'un only 24 hours before his side faced the U's in the League Two clash of the day, but not only ended up playing, scored the winner as well for good measure!

Hall: 'I told the manager I wanted to give it a go'

All hail the Hall; Ryan Hall that is, as Blues boss Paul Sturrock told us Sunday he did a decent Lazarus impersonation before Saturday's game, www.southendunited-mad.co.uk, and not only put in a terrific performance, a 7 in the S24 ratings, scored another of his trademark 25-yard curlers, his seventh strike of the season, which turned out to be the goal in a 2-1 scoreline that would see the Shrimpers go two points clear at the top of the table.

Hall told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I had some kind of tummy bug and was up virtually all of Friday night because it. I was being sick and had the runs too, and we weren’t sure if I was going to be able to play. Before the game though the manager asked me if I was up for it and I told him I wanted to give it a go. Thankfully it went well and I was able to score to help us win the game, but we really had to dig deep to get the three points.”

The U's may have doiminated possession in the early stages, but after a series of good saves by loanee keeper Luke Daniels kept his new side in the game Mark Phillips headed home just before the break, the other on-loan player in Michael Timlin had an embarrassment that was obviously a plan to make Swindon believe he was not worth having back, Oxford then equalised, and Ryan whipped in the winner!

Hall said: “This was a really big game and we’ve managed to break clear of the other teams a bit because we won it. Oxford might feel a bit unlucky to have lost but we’re obviously delighted. I’m also really pleased to score and after I noticed the keeper was off his line I just had to make sure I hit the target.”

We've seen it so often from the London-born wideboy it's almost getting boring, no it isn't, catch it here, again and again and all the other highlights: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk

And young Ryan even had time to talk to the Beeb after the match: "To be fair they're a tough team to play against, great on the ball, they made it tough for us. But we stuck in there and delt with it."

Indeed they dis, well done Ryan, another team of the week selecyion maybe, along with Saint Luke I would have thought!
