Phillips wants top scorer spot: 'I don't think Liam Dickinson's penalties should count'

Southend United defender Mark Phillips has been in great form, dominant at the back, and also up front, as his five goals have proved this season already!

Phillips grabs the first at Port Vale back in August, seems so long ago   Shrimpers centre-back Mark Phillips had scored only two goals in 11 years before this campaign started, he's now grabbed five in 14 games!   And the good news for the Shrimpers faithful is, he's hungry for more   Phillips told www.echo-news.co.uk:“I’ve been given the licence to go forward and attack the ball from set pieces and I’ve never really had that before so enjoying it. I also have that belief and confidence now that when I go forward I have a chance to score and I’m now disappointed when I don’t. I had a couple of chances at Barnet which I maybe should’ve done better with. But hopefully I’ll get another opportunity at Macclesfield tomorrow and I can make it count.”   So Mark is amongst a small group of Shrimpers who are joint second in the Blues golden boot table, all one behind the ex-Stockport hitman Liam Dickinson.   However, four of those have been spot-kicks, unfair screams Mark!   Phillips continued: “I don’t think Liam Dickinson’s penalties should count and I’ve told him that a few times now. I have been having a joke with the strikers here and reminding them I’ve scored more goals than them. But it doesn’t really matter who scores, just as long as we keep on picking up good results.”

But with Ryan Hall in such a rich vein of form with his delivery from corners and free-kicks that have supplied all of the former Brentford skippers goals it wouldn't be a total shock if he gets a few more before the season is out.
