Phillips: 'If we're up there around Christmas time then we can push on and really go for promotion'

Blues defender Mark Phillips believes the 1-1 draw with Premiership West Ham United last night was just what the team needed going into Saturday's league opener against Stockport County. Phillips: 'It was a relief to see everything that we were told was true'Shrimpers new centre-back Matt Phillips enjoyed Tuesday night's last pre-season friendly against the Premer League Hammers and believes Phillips told Blues Indider: "It was a nice sharp game against good Premier League opposition which really sets us up well for the opening game of the season. We looked very organised against West Ham and I think the goal has to be promotion from League Two. If we are there around Christmas time then we can push on and really go for it. As a side we have now been together for a few games and last night was the first time it really started to work."Phillips celebrated by signing a two-year contract before Monday's game on the back of the transfer embargo being dropped shortly. And there's no doubt that one of the reasons Mark is confident of the future at Roots Hall, having played against the Shrimpers for both Millwall and Brentford, is manager Paul Sturrock. Mark continued: "There were concerns but I knew a manager of Paul Sturrock's quality wouldn't be coming to a Club if those concerns weren't going to be cleared up. I listened to what was said and put my trust in those problems going away. We had guarantees in our contract but it was a relief to see everything that we were told was true and now we can move on."Looks like he got paid then, good luck on Saturday Mark. The Phillips FilesPersonal informationFull nameMark Ian PhillipsDate of birthJanuary 27, 1982 (1982-01-27) (age 28)Place of birthLambeth, EnglandHeight6 ft 2 in (1.88 m)Playing positionDefenderSenior career*YearsTeamApps†(Gls)†2001-2008Millwall67(1)2007→ Darlington (loan)8(0)2008-2010Brentford55(1)* Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 16:10, 8 May 2010 (UTC).† Appearances (Goals).(Player information supplied by Wikipedia, for the full article go here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Phillips_(footballer)
