Shrimpers Irish under-19 midfielder Kane Ferdinand has been a revelation since coming into the side and will now discuss signing a first professional contract with the club. Kane Ferdinand: Still on a youth team contract at the moment Kane Ferdinand has opened discussions with Southend United over his first professional contract with the club. The 18-year-old has shone in the last eight matches for Paul Sturrock's side. And he is now set to be rewarded with an improved deal. "We're in talks with Kane about upgrading his contract. He's still on a youth team contract at the moment but has done very well in the first team. I think it says it all when you see that our results have improved since he came in to the team." Ferdinand, who has been with Blues since attending an open trials day when he was 14-years-old, made his first team debut at Oxford United on New Year's Day. He has been used to a defensive midfield role, alongside skipper Craig Easton and has impressed enough to be called up in to the Republic of Ireland under 19 squad. "I'm really pleased for Kane. He came in at a difficult time for the team beacsue we weren't doing well at home. He's looked a man though and his pace has been a real benefit for us in there. His reading of the game is excellent and he also seems to be taking the ball a lot more now too. I'm sure he has a lot of years ahead of him at Southend United."
