Paul Sturrock: 'Contemplate freshening the team up and perhaps I should have done that'
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock lamented on his small squad after his team's five match unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of top four side Shrewsbury Town. Sturrock: 'Get back to the standards we have been achieving at Accrington' Blues boss Paul Sturrock was as honest as ever after the final whistle blew on his side's disappointing 2-0 defeat at Roots Hall Saturday afternoon, Jon Taylor and former striker Matt Harrold with the goals for the Shrews, accepting the visitors had outplayed the Shrimpers.Maybe he should have given a player or two a rest? Sturrock told the Press Association: "Our squad is not the biggest and this team has been successful for the last eight or nine games, so you have to go with it. But here it looked like a bridge too far. Before the match I did contemplate freshening the team up and, with hindsight, perhaps I should have done that."Not too sure what he could have done with a side that had won three on the trot, though must be tempting to give Lee Sawyer a go in midfield at the weekend after a couple of decent sub appearances, and a lot will depend on the verdict on Bilel Mohsni's injury.However, the Southend manager is now looking forward to having a full seven days with his side, and he'll need it to get Barry Corr back into some sort of form, or we might see Harry Crawford given a rare start. Sturrock continued: "We have had a great run and now we can appreciate the rest we will have without a midweek game. I'm hoping we can get back on track at Accrington next Saturday and get back to the standards we have been achieving. We did create some chances and if one of those had gone in during the first half then it could have been a different game, but on the day the best team won and there's not doubt about that."
