Paterson and Barnard on Norwich City FC and Southampton FC
Strikers Matt Paterson and Lee Barnard swapped clubs in the January transfer window and both got their opening goals for their new teams Saturday. Paterson: 'If we can get something from Norwich it would be a huge boost'Matt Paterson joined the Shrimpers from Southampton when top scorer Lee Barnard went in the other direction durng the January transfer window.He would be the first to accept it wasn't the best of starts, but Matt followed his goal in the reserves in midweek with a good finish in the league game at MK Dons on Saturday after coming off the subs bench. Sadly it came too late to affect the result in a 3-1 defeat.However, the 20-year-old striker will be hoping that Blues boss Steve Tilson has seen enough to let him grab another chance in the starting line-up.Paterson told www.echo-news.co.uk : "It was good to score and get my first goal for Southend. It was a shame that it came so late and that it couldn't help us get something from the game but hopefully now I can build on this and start to get a few more. It's certainly helped my own confidence and of course I would love to start the next game but that's the manager's decision and he knows best what to do." What he does know is that they don't get much tougher than two games in four days against former Premiership clubs Norwich City and Charlton Athletic.Paterson concluded: "These are matches that you want to be involved in and if we can get something from them it would be a huge boost to our confidence for the remainder of the season. That's what we want to happen and hopefully it can because it would be a big and important thing for us." Saints Pardew on Barnard; 'he was brilliant for us'Meanwhile, as chances came and went at the stadium:mk Saturday thoughts couldn't help but go out to former striker Lee Barnard, and he will still be the clubs top scorer come May, who was scoring his own opening goals for his new club at the weekend at Southend's next opponents, Norwich.Barnard spoke to www.dailyecho.co.uk: "When you come to a new club you want to get off the mark as quickly as possible. I've had a couple of chances in past games which haven't gone for me, so to finally get off the mark is a big relief." Happy with the 2-0 win that handed the Canaries their first home defeat since the seven goal thrashing by ColU on the opening day of the season, Southampton manager Alan Pardew payed tribute to Barney who has not had the easiest of starts at St. Mary's.Pardew said after the game: "I'm so pleased for Lee because our fans will know that he missed a big chance away at Brentford, missed a chance at home against Stockport so his settling in period hasn't been good. He needed those goals today, and on the back of his hard work I thought he was man of the match today, he was brilliant for us, which is good news as we now have him and Rickie Lambert up front."
