Martin: 'Keep on getting good results to make sure we stay up there and get promotion'

15 January 2012 17:38
Northampton Town Southend United wideboy Dave Martin is a happy Shrimper, after helping his new club return to the top of the table while hitting the back of the old onion bag for the first time in nearly two years!

Martin: 'We had the extra gear and in the end it was a great win for us'

Two games, one goal; not a bad record when the last time you scored was May 2010!

He's getting better all the time, and the 26-year-old could have had a brace if the referee had been a bit more generous when he decided the former Lion had kicked the ball out of Cobblers keeper Hall's hand

Even so, Martin is happy enough to take his new club to the top of the npower League two table.

Martin told www.echo-news.co.uk: "It was great to get the goal but getting the win was more important, especially as it took us back top. It's where we are in May that obviously matters the most but it's always nice to be top of the league at any stage. Now we need to push on and keep on getting good results to make sure we stay up there and get promotion."

No argument there Dave, who accepted that the game was too close to call as it entered it's final stages.

Martin said: "When it went 2-2 there was a 10 to 15 minute spell when both sides looked like scoring. But we had the extra gear and in the end it was a great win for us."

The Echo tells us that this was Martin's first goal in 21 months, when he scored for Derby County in a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City in May 2010!
