Loanee Shrimpers await Sturrock decision: Daniels heads back to West Brom, for now?

Dagenham & Redbridge Valiants Port Vale FC: Former Torquay United player Elliot Benyon made his debut Monday in the 1-1 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge while both Michael Timlin and Luke Daniels could have played their last games for Southend United!

Daniels: 'I'd like to thank all the Southend fans for their support over the last two months'

So is there a Shrimpers future for goalkeeper Luke Daniels?   We also still await definitive news on midfielder Michael Timlin, who bar that error at the end had a fine game, crikey, what a goal!

One player though who has pledged his future with Southend is new striker from Swindon Town Elliot Benyon, and Blues boss Paul Sturrock felt he made a fine debut on the Bank Holiday derby with the Daggers.

Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I thought Elliot did OK, especially as he hasn't been playing lately. He's still finding his feet here and it was hard for him to come in and play in a team that wasn't playing well. He showed some good signs but we need to bring in some other signings.”

Well, yes, we agree; but at the moment United have to stick with the squad they have, and hopefully news of Timlin's permanent signing will be confirmed soon in time for Saturday's game against Port Vale at Roots Hall, five games now since the home faithful has seen a win!   However, for West Brom shot stopper Luke Daniels, who has been in superb form since joining the Shrimpers on loan last October, the future seems to be in the air.

Good news for former No.1 Glenn Morris of course, but his confidence must have taken a knock for his demotion to the bench since he recovered from injury, the whole reason Luke was brought in in the first place!

Sturrock said:“I think Luke has done very, very well for us but I haven't had a chance to talk to him about his future yet. We committed to him even when our first team goalkeeper was fit again but that's what you have to do with loan signings. There may be one or two goals he could've done better with but overall I think he's been excellent.”

As ever, we shall see, but even Luke thinks the odds are against a return!

Writing on Twitter Daniels said: 'On my way up to Birmingham, I'd like to thank all the Southend fans for their support over the last two months.'

Not too promising there then, good luck Glenn at the weekend then if that turn out we have indeed seen the last of Luke!
