Lillywhite's Horton: 'They frustrated us in the second half, but we did enough to win the game'

Preston North End assistant manager Brian Horton was in no doubt his side had done enough to win Saturday afternoon's FA Cup first round tie with Southend United that finished goalless.

Horton points out to Phil Brown where Nicholson should have placed the spot kick

Preston huffed and puffed and certainly had most of the ball while creating the best chances, but couldn't find the net through a combination of Luke Daniels, bad fortune, and a missed penalty; their keeper didn't do too badly as well, twice Ryan Hall could have stolen the winner.

So they have to do it all again at Roots Hall on Tuesday, November 22nd, kick-off 19.45, after a 0-0 draw at Deepdale Saturday in the opening round proper of England's premier knock-out competition; talking of England, 1-0 over Spain, not bad.

Anyway, Lillywhite's assistant boss refused to put all the blame on spot-kick taker Barry Nicholson, the second Luke has saved without actually touching the ball, that's class, and, unsurprisingly, took a look at the Essex boys tactics.

Horton told www.pnefc.net: "A lot of positives came out of today's game, we created a lot of chances, there goalkeeper had a blinder and he was the man of the match without a shadow of the doubt. They have set their team out with a formation that is going to frustrate us and make it difficult. We played well in the first half and they frustrated us in the second half, but we did enough to win the game."

Well Sorry Brian we didn't just open up and let you walk the ball into the back of the net, but even then you might have found a way to clear the bar, or more than likely Luke would have still saved it!

Horton continued: "The back five plus the midfield players did their jobs well, which we have been working on in training. We are pleased with that part of the game today, we looked more solid and Thorsten (Stuckmann) has only one save to make, (I counted two actually, not that I'm boasting), which was a fantastic one. What happens in a game like this is that you are constantly on the attack and then all of a sudden they hit you with a sucker punch. The crowd were terrific today, they stuck with the team, and it's hard for them because we are not winning games but I think they see the situation as well."
