Left back crisis sees Sturrock turn to Barker as latest Shrimper signing on loan

02 August 2010 00:27
A possible injury crisis at left back has convinced Blues boss Paul Sturrock to sign Plymouth Argyle defender Chris Barker on a one month loan deal after playing a full game at Eastbourne. Dismissed by Peter Reid at Plymouth according to reports; he'll do!It started the day as a rumour, and we await official confirmation that he's signing No. 16, if you accept Josh Simpson is No. 15, but it's on Wikipedia so that's good enough for us!Also according to Wiki 'shortly before going into his third year at the club, Barker was dismissed from training by the new manager, Peter Reid. In July 2010, it was confirmed Barker was fully removed from the squad but confirmation of his release is yet to be announced.' I'm liking this guy more and more, and Chris certainly has the experience, if it's cover the Shrimpers are after as injuries have hit new signing Peter Gilbert and old favourite Johnny Herd in the left back position.Barker played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win against Eastbourne Borough, and should be seen in the friendly against the Hammers on Tuesday evening at Roots Hall.Blimey, if this is all true, and Uncle Ron proves the solvency of the club on Monday, it's also being confidently rumoured that everyone got paid last month, then boss Paul Sturrock could have two complete teams by the season kick-off on August 7!The Barker FilesPersonal informationFull nameChristopher Andrew BarkerDate of birth2 March 1980 (1980-03-02) (age 30)Place of birthSheffield, EnglandHeight6 ft 0 in (1.83 m)Playing positionDefenderClub informationCurrent clubSouthend United on loan from (Plymouth Argyle)NumberTBAYouth career1997-1999Alfreton TownSenior career*YearsTeamApps†(Gls)†1999-2002Barnsley113(3)2002-2007Cardiff City159(0)2004→ Stoke City (loan)4(0)2006-2007→ Colchester United (loan)38(0)2007-2008Queens Park Rangers25(0)2008-Plymouth Argyle54(0)2010→ Southend United (loan)0(0)* Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 19:00, 3 May 2010 (UTC).† Appearances (Goals).(Player information supplied by Wikipedia, for the full article go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Barker)
