Last chance saloon for Sawyer - Sturrock

20 January 2011 13:00
Southend boss Paul Sturrock has backed new signing Lee Sawyer to take his third and final chance at Roots Hall. The 21-year-old former Chelsea midfielder spent loan spells at Roots Hall in 2008 and 2009 but was sent back to his parent club last time around following a breach of club discipline. Sturrock told the club`s official website: "There has never been any question marks over Lee`s ability and he knows he is now drinking in the last chance saloon with us. "I saw him play a few times when he was at Chelsea and he stood out for them and did the same for Woking this season. "He`s always had a bad street cred and there were doubts about him off the pitch but his agent came to us asking for another chance with Southend and I`ve had a very long chat with Lee about things. "He knows he has to make the most of this chance and is determined to grab it with both hands."
