'I think teams have sussed us out a bit': Thoughts from the training ground

21 December 2011 11:46
Early thoughts from the Southend United squad as they prepare for the vital festive holiday period of games that could see a return to winning ways, or the bad run turning into a slump!

Ferdinand: 'We need to come up with something different'   So it's the final countdown; eat, drink and be merry, and then start hoping the Shrimpers can get out of the present mess thay find themselves in and pick up a bag full of points over the holiday period.

Let's face it, we were winging in a touch during the end of that great 17-match unbeaten run, Oxford at home anyone, and the last four games were just waiting to happen, shame they had to all fall in a row, but that's footy and we really must try and turn it around over the next couple of weeks or mid-table obscurity will await, and I still believe this squad is too good for that.

Anyway, Blues boss Paul Sturrock is the man for the job I'm sure and will get the players in the best possible condition for Aldershot on Boxing Day and AFC Wimbledon on New Years Eve, both away, then Dagenham & Redbridge at Roots Hall on Bank Holiday Monday January 3nd.   So what are the players thinking?   It's interview day at Boots & Laces and Echoman Chris Phillips has been passing on one or two thoughts from the team.

Midfielder Kane Ferdinand said: 'I think teams have sussed us out a bit and we need to come up with something different.'   Bit sad that placing two men on Ryan Hall means sides have 'sussed us out' but he has a point.

For me though it's just too many players out of form at one go, of which Kane is a main suspect, I hope he isn't dreaming of Upton Park just yet, and that's what we've got to turn around to keep us in that top three.

One player who should stay in the starting line-up is Luke Prosser, at centre-back or left-back possibily in Peter Gilbert's absense, lot depends on Chris Barker of course, while Mark Phillips looks OK after a hamstring scare.

Prosser: 'It's been good to have a free week. We're now fresh and raring to go for Boxing Day.'   Midfielder Lee Sawyer will miss the the Shots, shame, many believed he should be in the first eleven for this one, as he's picked up yet another thigh injury.

Striker Liam Dickinson sounds as he's fit enough: 'Can't wait for the gaffa to run the bollox off us 2day'   As for Mr. Phillips, no worries, he's getting in the Christmas spirit nice and early: 'Maddest thing just happened I could hear loud carol music coming from outside house so I look out and see a car pulling a bear dressed .....as Santa and people going from house to house asking for money as it rolled down street....weird'
